Context of 2 Kings 13:6
4Then Jehoahaz prayed for the Lord’s help, and the Lord heard his prayer, for he could see how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. 5So the Lord provided someone to rescue the Israelites from the tyranny of the Arameans. Then Israel lived in safety again as they had in former days. But they continued to sin, following the evil example of Jeroboam. They also allowed the Asherah pole in Samaria to remain standing. 7Finally, Jehoahaz’s army was reduced to 50 charioteers, 10 chariots, and 10,000 foot soldiers. The king of Aram had killed the others, trampling them like dust under his feet. 8The rest of the events in Jehoahaz’s reign—everything he did and the extent of his power—are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6The grove also in Samaria - Asherah, or Astarte, remained in Samaria, and there was she worshipped, with all her abominable rites.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6But walked therein - Rather, “he walked therein,” meaning Joash, the “saviour” of the preceding verse. There remained the grove also in Samaria - It seems strange that Jehu had not destroyed this when he put down the worship of Baal 2 Kings 10:26-28. Perhaps the “grove” or “Asherah” worship was too closely connected with the old worship in high places to be set aside with the same ease as the rites newly introduced from Phoenicia.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6Even after God saved them, Israel kept sinning. This led to the fall of the northern kingdom (2 Kings 17:21–23; 1 Kings 14:15–16). This Asherah pole (a Canaanite fertility symbol set up by Ahab, 1 Kings 16:33) was apparently not destroyed during Jehu’s removal of Baal worship (2 Kings 10:26–29).Read the comment
