Context of Isaiah 29:19
17Is it not yet a very little while Till Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, And the fruitful field be esteemed as a forest? 18In that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book, And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness. The humble also shall increase their joy in the Lord, And the poor among men shall rejoice In the Holy One of Israel. 20For the terrible one is brought to nothing, The scornful one is consumed, And all who watch for iniquity are cut off— 21Who make a man an offender by a word, And lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, And turn aside the just by empty words.

Commentaries on Isaiah 29:19
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19The meek - The word meek‘ usually refers to those who are patient in the reception of injuries, but the Hebrew word used here (ענוים ‛ănâviym ) means properly the oppressed, the afflicted, the unhappy Psalm 9:13; Psalm 10:12, Psalm 10:17; Proverbs 3:34; Isaiah 11:4. It involves usually the idea of humility or “virtuous suffering” (compare Psalm 25:9; Psalm 37:11; Psalm 69:33). Those who, when in trouble, can truly rejoice in God, shall soon have cause greatly to rejoice in him. The grace of meekness…Read the comment
