Context of Job 6:17
15But my brothers are as undependable as intermittent streams, as the streams that overflow 16when darkened by thawing ice and swollen with melting snow, but that stop flowing in the dry season, and in the heat vanish from their channels. 18Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go off into the wasteland and perish. 19The caravans of Tema look for water, the traveling merchants of Sheba look in hope.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 In his prosperity Job formed great expectations from his friends, but now was disappointed. This he compares to the failing of brooks in summer. Those who rest their expectations on the creature, will find it fail when it should help them; whereas those who make God their confidence, have help in the time of need, He 4:16. Those who make gold their hope, sooner or later will be ashamed of it, and of their confidence in it. It is our wisdom to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-27Job and his friends might have shared a covenant (special agreement) of loyalty and faith (Hebrew khesed; see Genesis 21:23; Exodus 15:13; 1 Chronicles 16:34). This bond would have made them like brothers, those who protect, and friends he could trust (Job 6:14–15; 6:21–23, 27). If they were in a covenant with one another, Job was accusing his friends of violating their covenant with him.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1717. wax warm--rather, "At the time when." ("But they soon wax") [Umbreit]. "they become narrower (flow in a narrower bed), they are silent (cease to flow noisily); in the heat (of the sun) they are consumed or vanish out of their place. First the stream flows more narrowly--then it becomes silent and still; at length every trace of water disappears by evaporation under the hot sun" [Umbreit].Read the comment
