Context of Job 36:14
12But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die without knowledge. 13“The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when he fetters them, they do not cry for help. They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines. 15But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction. 16“He is wooing you from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14They die in youth - Exactly what the psalmist says, "Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days," Psalm 55:23. Literally, the words of Elihu are, "They shall die in the youth of their soul." Their life is among the unclean - בקדשים bakedeshim, among the whores, harlots, prostitutes, and sodomites. In this sense the word is used, though it also signifies consecrated persons; but we know that in idolatry characters of this kind were…Read the comment

And their life is amnong the unclean - Margin, “Sodomites.” The idea is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-14Verses 5-14 Elihu here shows that God acts as righteous Governor. He is always ready to defend those that are injured. God intends, when he afflicts us, to discover past sins to us, and to bring them to our remembrance. Also, to dispose our hearts to be taught: affliction makes people willing to learn, through the grace of…Read the comment

Same sentiment as Job 36:11, 12, expanded. hypocrites--or, the ungodly [Maurer]; but "hypocrites" is perhaps a distinct class from the openly wicked (Job 36:12). heap up wrath--of God against themselves (Ro 2:5). Umbreit translates, "nourish their wrath against God," instead of "crying" unto Him. This suits well the parallelism and the Hebrew. But the English Version gives a good parallelism, "hypocrites" answering to "cry not" (Job 27:8, 10)…Read the comment
