Context of Job 18:15
13It eats away parts of his skin; death’s firstborn devours his limbs. 14He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors. Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling. 16His roots dry up below and his branches wither above. 17The memory of him perishes from the earth; he has no name in the land.

Commentaries on Job 18:15
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15It shall dwell in his tabernacle - Desolation is here personified, and it is said that it shall be the inhabitant, its former owner being destroyed. Brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation, so that, like Sodom and Gomorrah, it may be an everlasting monument of the Divine displeasure. In the Persian poet Saady, we find a couplet which contains a similar sentiment: - Purdeh daree meekund dar keesri Keesar ankeboot Boomee Noobat meezund ber kumbed…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15It shall dwell in his tabernacle - It is uncertain what is to be understood as referred to here. Some suppose that the word to be understood is soul, and that the meaning is “his soul,” that is, he himself, “shall dwell in his tent.” Rosenmuller, Noyes, Wemyss, and others, suppose that the word is terror. “Terror (בלהה ballâhâh ) shall dwell in his tent,” the same word which is used in the plural in the previous verse. This is undoubtedly the correct…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-21Verses 11-21 Bildad describes the destruction wicked people are kept for, in the other world, and which in some degree, often seizes them in this world. The way of sin is the way of fear, and leads to everlasting confusion, of which the present terrors of an impure conscience are earnests, as in Cain and Judas. Miserable indeed is a wicked man's death, how secure soever his life was. See him dying; all that he trusts to for his support shall be taken from…Read the comment
