Context of Isaiah 47:5
3Your nakedness will be exposed and your shame uncovered. I will take vengeance; I will spare no one.” 4Our Redeemer—the Lord Almighty is his name— is the Holy One of Israel. “Sit in silence, go into darkness, queen city of the Babylonians; no more will you be called queen of kingdoms. 6I was angry with my people and desecrated my inheritance; I gave them into your hand, and you showed them no mercy. Even on the aged you laid a very heavy yoke. 7You said, ‘I am forever— the eternal queen!’ But you did not consider these things or reflect on what might happen.

Commentaries on Isaiah 47:5
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Sit thou silent - The same general sentiment is expressed here as in the preceding verses, though the figure is changed. In Isaiah 47:1-3, Babylon is represented under the image of a frivolous and delicately-reared female, suddenly reduced from her exalted station, and compelled to engage in the most menial and laborious employment. Here she is represented as in a posture of mourning. To sit in silence is emblematic of deep sorrow, or affliction (see…Read the comment
