Context of Ezekiel 16:8

6“ ‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!” 7I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew and developed and entered puberty. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, yet you were stark naked. “ ‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine. 9“ ‘I bathed you with water and washed the blood from you and put ointments on you. 10I clothed you with an embroidered dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen and covered you with costly garments.

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8At this point, the Lord covered her with his cloak. In the ancient world, this action showed a promise of marriage (compare Ruth 3:9). It was a sign that he was taking her as his own. The Lord then made a covenant with Jerusalem. In the picture Ezekiel uses, this covenant is like a marriage. The Lord chose her and joined himself to her. Later, the Lord made a covenant with David and his descendants. At that time, he also chose Jerusalem as the place where…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. thy time of love--literally, "loves" (compare So 2:10-13). Thou wast of marriageable age, but none was willing to marry thee, naked as thou wast. I then regarded thee with a look of grace when the full time of thy deliverance was come (Ge 15:13, 14; Ac 7:6, 7). It is not she that makes the advance to God, but God to her; she has nothing to entitle her to such notice, yet He regards her not with mere benevolence, but with love, such as one cherishes to…Read the comment
