Context of 2 Kings 25:19
17Each pillar was eighteen cubits high. The bronze capital on top of one pillar was three cubits high and was decorated with a network and pomegranates of bronze all around. The other pillar, with its network, was similar. 18The commander of the guard took as prisoners Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the priest next in rank and the three doorkeepers. Of those still in the city, he took the officer in charge of the fighting men, and five royal advisers. He also took the secretary who was chief officer in charge of conscripting the people of the land and sixty of the conscripts who were found in the city. 20Nebuzaradan the commander took them all and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 21There at Riblah, in the land of Hamath, the king had them executed. So Judah went into captivity, away from her land.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19And five men of them that were in the king's presence - These were principal counselors, and confidential officers. In Jeremiah 52:25, it is said he took seven men who were near the king's person, and the same number is found in the Arabic in this place; and the Chaldee has no less than fifty men; but in Jeremiah this, as well as all the rest of the versions, reads seven. Probably they were no more than five at first, or, perhaps Jeremiah reckoned with…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-21Verses 8-21 The city and temple were burnt, and, it is probable, the ark in it. By this, God showed how little he cares for the outward pomp of his worship, when the life and power of religion are neglected. The walls of Jerusalem were thrown down, and the people carried captive to Babylon. The vessels of the temple were carried away. When the things signified were sinned away, what should the signs stand there for? It was righteous with God to deprive…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-20Instead of deporting important citizens and officials like during the Babylonian invasion of 597 BC (2 Kings 24:14), Nebuchadnezzar executed these leaders. He even had religious leaders killed. Seraiah, the high priest, was killed. But his son Jehozadak was exiled (1 Chronicles 6:15). This allowed the priestly line to continue in captivity and later return to Jerusalem, starting in 538 BC (Ezra 1:1–2:20).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. five men of them that were in the king's presence--that is, who belonged to the royal retinue. It is probable that there were five at first, and that other two were found afterwards (Jr 52:25).Read the comment
