Context of Song of Songs 6:4
2My beloved has gone down to his garden, to the flowerbeds of balsam spices, to graze in the gardens, and to gather lilies. 3I am my lover’s and my lover is mine; he grazes among the lilies. My darling, you are as beautiful as Tirzah, as lovely as Jerusalem, as awe-inspiring as bannered armies! 5Turn your eyes away from me – they overwhelm me! Your hair is like a flock of goats descending from Mount Gilead. 6Your teeth are like a flock of sheep coming up from the washing; each has its twin; not one of them is missing.

Commentaries on Song of Songs 6:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4Beautiful - as Tirzah - This is supposed to be the address of Solomon to the bride. Tirzah was a city in the tribe of Ephraim, ( Joshua 12:24;), and the capital of that district. It appears to have been beautiful in itself, and beautifully situated, for Jeroboam made it his residence before Samaria was built; and it seems to have been the ordinary residence of the kings of Israel, 1 Kings 14:17; 1 Kings 15:21. Its same signifies beautiful or delightful…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-10Verses 4-10 All the real excellence and holiness on earth centre in the church. Christ goes forth subduing his enemies, while his followers gain victories over the world, the flesh, and the devil. He shows the tenderness of a Redeemer, the delight he takes in his redeemed people, and the workings of his own grace in them. True believers alone can possess the beauty of holiness. And when their real character is known, it will be commended. Both the church…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4Tirzah was a city-state as early as the time of Joshua. It eventually became significant enough to be the capital of the northern kingdom (Joshua 12:24; 1 Kings 15:33). The town's name means "pleasant." Jerusalem was the capital of the united kingdom of David and Solomon. After that, it remained the most important city of Judah.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. Tirzah--meaning "pleasant" (He 13:21); "well-pleasing" (Mt 5:14); the royal city of one of the old Canaanite kings (Jos 12:24); and after the revolt of Israel, the royal city of its kings, before Omri founded Samaria (1Ki 16:8, 15). No ground for assigning a later date than the time of Solomon to the Song, as Tirzah was even in his time the capital of the north (Israel), as Jerusalem was of the south (Judah). Jerusalem--residence of the kings of Judah…Read the comment
- Rashi on Tanakh · v. 4You are fair, my beloved, as Tirzah And the Holy One, blessed be He, praises her for this: You are fair, my beloved, when you are desirable (רְצוּיָה) to me. So it is expounded in Sifrei (Deut. 6:9).Read the comment
