Context of Nehemiah 8:7
5Ezra opened the book in plain view of all the people, for he was elevated above all the people. When he opened the book, all the people stood up. 6Ezra blessed the lord, the great God, and all the people replied “Amen! Amen!” as they lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped the lord with their faces to the ground. Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah – all of whom were Levites – were teaching the people the law, as the people remained standing. 8They read from the book of God’s law, explaining it and imparting insight. Thus the people gained understanding from what was read. 9Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priestly scribe, and the Levites who were imparting understanding to the people said to all of them, “This day is holy to the lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping when they heard the words of the law.

Commentaries on Nehemiah 8:7
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7The names here (and in Nehemiah 9:4, Nehemiah 9:5; Nehemiah 10:9) seem not to be the personal appellations of individuals, but rather designations of Levitical families, the descendants respectively of Jeshua, etc., who lived not later than the time of Zerubbabel Nehemiah 7:43; Nehemiah 12:8.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-9The Levites were responsible for teaching people God’s word (Deuteronomy 33:10; Malachi 2:5–6). They likely explained the Hebrew Scriptures to smaller groups in Aramaic. Most people spoke Aramaic, the language of Babylon, instead of Hebrew as their first language. Jewish leaders later translated large parts of the Hebrew Bible into Aramaic, so people could hear and study the Bible in a language they understood.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 7-87-8. caused the people to understand the law ... gave the sense--Commentators are divided in opinion as to the import of this statement. Others maintain that the duty of these Levites consisted in explaining to the people, many of whom had become very ignorant…Read the comment
