Context of Matthew 16:10
8When Jesus learned of this, he said, “You who have such little faith! Why are you arguing among yourselves about having no bread? 9Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many baskets you took up? 11How could you not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!” 12Then they understood that he had not told them to be on guard against the yeast in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-12Verses 5-12 Christ speaks of spiritual things under a similitude, and the disciples misunderstand him of carnal things. He took it ill that they should think him as thoughtful about bread as they were; that they should be so little acquainted with his way of preaching. Then understood they what he meant. Christ teaches by the Spirit of wisdom in the heart, opening the understanding to the Spirit of revelation in the word.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10Jesus had shown his disciples that he is the true "bread of life" (15:32–39; John 6:35, 48). In contrast, the Jewish leaders taught things that were wrong. Their false teaching spread everywhere, like yeast (or leaven) spreads through bread dough (see study note on Matt 16:11–12).Read the comment
