Context of John 13:17
15For I have given you an example – you should do just as I have done for you. 16I tell you the solemn truth, the slave is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them. 18“What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture, ‘The one who eats my bread has turned against me.’ 19I am telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am he.

Commentaries on John 13:17
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17If ye know these things, happy, etc. - True happiness consists in the knowledge of God, and in obedience to him. A man is not happy because he knows much; but because he receives much of the Divine nature, and is, in all his conduct, conformed to the Divine will. "They who have read many books (says Menu) are more exalted than such as have seldom studied; they who retain what they have read, than forgetful readers; they who fully understand, than such as…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-38The setting is the final Passover meal of Jesus on Thursday evening. During this meal, Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus. John does not describe the meal itself like the Synoptic Gospels do (Matthew 26:17–29; Mark 14:12–25; Luke 22:7–20; see also 1 Corinthians 11:23–26). John focuses on other activities at the event, such as: the foot washing (John 13:1–17), Judas’s betrayal (13:18–30), and the prediction of Peter’s denials (13:31–38).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 16-1716-17. The servant is not greater than his lord, &c.--an oft-repeated saying (Mt 10:24, &c.). If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them--a hint that even among real Christians the doing of such things would come lamentably short of the knowing.Read the comment
