Context of Jeremiah 7:22
20So,” the Lord God says, “my raging fury will be poured out on this land. It will be poured out on human beings and animals, on trees and crops. And it will burn like a fire which cannot be extinguished.” 21The Lord said to the people of Judah, “The Lord God of Israel who rules over all says: ‘You might as well go ahead and add the meat of your burnt offerings to that of the other sacrifices and eat it, too! Consider this: When I spoke to your ancestors after I brought them out of Egypt, I did not merely give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23I also explicitly commanded them: “Obey me. If you do, I will be your God and you will be my people. Live exactly the way I tell you and things will go well with you.” 24But they did not listen to me or pay any attention to me. They followed the stubborn inclinations of their own wicked hearts. They acted worse and worse instead of better.

Commentaries on Jeremiah 7:22
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-28Verses 21-28 God shows that obedience was required of them. That which God commanded was, Hearken diligently to the voice of the Lord thy God. The promise is very encouraging. Let God's will be your rule, and his favour shall be your happiness. God was displeased with disobedience. We understand the gospel as little as the Jews understood the law, if we think that even the sacrifice of Christ lessens our obligation to obey.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20-23The people's offerings and sacrifices meant nothing to the Lord if they were disobedient. Their sacrifices could not force God to act against His will. Instead, these offerings showed the people's trust in God's forgiveness. When people tried to use sacrifices to manipulate God while living selfishly, it only angered Him (Isaiah 1:10216; Amos 5:21–27). Obeying God allows for a personal relationship with Him, which is the foundation for a bright future…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2222. Not contradicting the divine obligation of the legal sacrifices. But, "I did not require sacrifices, unless combined with moral obedience" (Psa 50:8; 51:16, 17). The superior claim of the moral above the positive precepts of the law was marked by the ten commandments having been delivered first, and by the two tables of stone being deposited alone in the ark (De 5:6). The negative in Hebrew often supplies the want of the comparative: not excluding the…Read the comment
