Context of Jeremiah 11:21
19Before this I had been like a docile lamb ready to be led to the slaughter. I did not know they were making plans to kill me. I did not know they were saying, “Let’s destroy the tree along with its fruit! Let’s remove Jeremiah from the world of the living so people will not even be reminded of him any more.” 20So I said to the Lord, “O Lord who rules over all, you are a just judge! You examine people’s hearts and minds. I want to see you pay them back for what they have done because I trust you to vindicate my cause.” Then the Lord told me about some men from Anathoth who were threatening to kill me. They had threatened, “Stop prophesying in the name of the Lord or we will kill you!” 22So the Lord who rules over all said, “I will surely punish them! Their young men will be killed in battle. Their sons and daughters will die of starvation. 23Not one of them will survive. I will bring disaster on those men from Anathoth who threatened you. A day of reckoning is coming for them.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-23Verses 18-23 The prophet Jeremiah tells much concerning himself, the times he lived in being very troublesome. Those of his own city plotted how they might cause his death. They thought to end his days, but he outlived most of his enemies; they thought to blast his memory, but it lives to this day, and will be blessed while time lasts. God knows all the secret designs of his and his people's enemies, and can, when he pleases, make them known. God's…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-23Jeremiah's enemies included his family and relatives in his hometown of Anathoth, and he grieved over their fate (Jeremiah 10:20). They demanded that he stop prophesying in the Lord's name. In line with the Lord's promise to protect him (Jeremiah 1:19), the Lord told Jeremiah that even the families of his enemies, including their children, would lose their lives when their punishment came.Read the comment
