Context of Isaiah 63:9
7I will tell of the faithful acts of the Lord, of the Lord’s praiseworthy deeds. I will tell about all the Lord did for us, the many good things he did for the family of Israel, because of his compassion and great faithfulness. 8He said, “Certainly they will be my people, children who are not disloyal.” He became their deliverer. Through all that they suffered, he suffered too. The messenger sent from his very presence delivered them. In his love and mercy he protected them; he lifted them up and carried them throughout ancient times. 10But they rebelled and offended his holy Spirit, so he turned into an enemy and fought against them. 11His people remembered the ancient times. Where is the one who brought them up out of the sea, along with the shepherd of his flock? Where is the one who placed his holy Spirit among them,

Commentaries on Isaiah 63:9
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9In all their affliction he was afflicted - This is a most beautiful sentiment, meaning that God sympathized with them in all their trials, and that he was ever ready to aid them. This sentiment accords well with the connection; but there has been some doubt whether this is the meaning of the Hebrew. Lowth renders it, as has been already remarked, It was not an envoy, nor an angel of his presence that saved him.‘ Noyes, In all their straits they had no…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-14Verses 7-14 The latter part of this chapter, and the whole of the next, seem to express the prayers of the Jews on their conversation. They acknowledge God's great mercies and favours to their nation. They confess their wickedness and hardness of heart; they entreat his forgiveness, and deplore the miserable condition under which they have so long suffered. The only-begotten Son of the Father became the Angel or Messenger of his love; thus he redeemed and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9He too was afflicted: God felt the pain of his suffering people, and their suffering caused him grief. Later, Jesus suffered for all humanity. He redeemed them: For example, see Exodus 12:25–33; 14:10–31; 23:20–23.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. he was afflicted--English Version reads the Hebrew as the Keri (Margin), does, "There was affliction to Him." But the Chetib (text) reads, "There was no affliction" (the change in Hebrew being only of one letter); that is, "In all their affliction there was no (utterly overwhelming) affliction" [Gesenius]; or, for "Hardly had an affliction befallen them, when the angel of His presence saved them" [Maurer]; or, as best suits the parallelism, "In all…Read the comment
