Context of Isaiah 4:2
1Seven women will grab hold of one man at that time. They will say, “We will provide our own food, we will provide our own clothes; but let us belong to you – take away our shame!” At that time the crops given by the Lord will bring admiration and honor; the produce of the land will be a source of pride and delight to those who remain in Israel. 3Those remaining in Zion, those left in Jerusalem, will be called “holy,” all in Jerusalem who are destined to live. 4At that time the sovereign master will wash the excrement from Zion’s women, he will rinse the bloodstains from Jerusalem’s midst, as he comes to judge and to bring devastation.

Commentaries on Isaiah 4:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2The branch of the Lord "the branch of Jehovah" - The Messiah of Jehovah, says the Chaldee. And Kimchi says, The Messiah, the Son of David. The branch is an appropriate title of the Messiah; and the fruit of the land means the great Person to spring from the house of Judah, and is only a parallel expression signifying the same; or perhaps the blessings consequent upon the redemption procured by him. Compare Isaiah 45:8; (note), where the same great event…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2The branch of the Lord - צמח יהוה yehovâh tsemach “The sprout” of Yahweh. This expression, and this verse, have had a great variety of interpretations. The Septuagint reads it, In that day God shall shine in counsel with glory upon the earth, to exalt, and to glorify the remnant of Israel.‘ The Chaldee renders it, In that day, the Messiah of the Lord shall be for joy and glory, and the doers of the law for praise and honor to those of Israel who are…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 2-6Verses 2-6 Not only the setting forth Christ's kingdom in the times of the apostles, but its enlargement by gathering the dispersed Jews into the church, is foretold. Christ is called the Branch of the Lord, being planted by his power, and flourishing to his praise. The gospel is the fruit of the Branch of the Lord; all the graces and comforts of the gospel spring from Christ. It is called the fruit of the earth, because it sprang up in this world, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2The Branch likely refers to the remnant (the faithful people who remain) who would form Israel’s new beginning after the exile (see Isaiah 6:13). Some understand the branch as the ideal descendant of David, the Messiah (God’s chosen king; see Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15–16; Zechariah 3:8; 6:12). Isaiah describes a beautiful and glorious change. The people had experienced shame and disgrace (Isaiah 3:17–25). Now they would experience fertility…Read the comment
