Context of Isaiah 11:5
3He will take delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by mere appearances, or make decisions on the basis of hearsay. 4He will treat the poor fairly, and make right decisions for the downtrodden of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and order the wicked to be executed. Justice will be like a belt around his waist, integrity will be like a belt around his hips. 6A wolf will reside with a lamb, and a leopard will lie down with a young goat; an ox and a young lion will graze together, as a small child leads them along. 7A cow and a bear will graze together, their young will lie down together. A lion, like an ox, will eat straw.

Commentaries on Isaiah 11:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5The girdle "The cincture" - All the ancient Versions, except that of Symmachus, have two different words for girdle in the two hemistichs. It is not probable that Isaiah would have repeated אזור azer, when a synonymous word so obvious as חגור chagor occurred. The tautology seems to have arisen from the mistake of some transcriber. The meaning of this verse is, that a zeal for justice and truth shall make him active and strong in executing the great work…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5And righteousness shall be the gridle of his loins - The sense of this verse is plain. He will always exhibit himself as a just and faithful king. “The girdle of the loins” refers to the cincture, or band, with which the ancients girded themselves. A part of their dress consisted of an outward, loose, flowing robe. This robe it was necessary to gird up, or to confine close to the body in active labor, or in running; and the meaning of the figure used here…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5Because the Messiah is righteous in his character, his rule will show justice, righteousness, and truth. These qualities will mark his reign. This will be very different from the condition of Jerusalem described in Isaiah 1:21. There, the city is described as unjust and unfaithful.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. righteousness ... girdle--(Re 1:13; 19:11). The antitypical High Priest (Ex 28:4). The girdle secures firmly the rest of the garments (1Pe 1:13). So "truth" gives firm consistency to the whole character (Ep 5:14). In Is 59:17, "righteousness" is His breastplate.Read the comment
