Context of Habakkuk 3:11
9Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth’s surface. 10When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high. The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear. 12You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations. 13You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11The sun and moon stood still - This was at the prayer of Joshua, when he fought against the Amorites. See Joshua 10:11-12; (note), and the notes there. At the light of thine arrows they went - I think we should translate: - By their light, thine arrows went abroad; By their brightness, the lightning of thy spear. Calvin very justly remarks that the arrows and spears of the Israelites are called those of God, under whose auspices the people fought: the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Sun and moon stood still (as one act retiring into) in their habitation - They withdrew, as it were, in the midst of the great tempest, wherein Joshua 10:11-13. “God cast down great stones from heaven upon” His enemies and they died; and “the sun stood still, and the moon stayed.” The sun too withdrew itself in the great darkness at the crucifixion, as not bearing to look upon the death of its Maker, when the majesty of the Sun of Righteousness was…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 3-15Verses 3-15 God's people, when in distress, and ready to despair, seek help by considering the days of old, and the years of ancient times, and by pleading them with God in prayer. The resemblance between the Babylonish and Egyptian captivities, naturally presents itself to the mind, as well as the possibility of a like deliverance through the power of Jehovah. God appeared in his glory. All the powers of nature are shaken, and the course of nature…Read the comment
