Context of Genesis 29:13
11Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep loudly. 12When Jacob explained to Rachel that he was a relative of her father and the son of Rebekah, she ran and told her father. When Laban heard this news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he rushed out to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban how he was related to him. 14Then Laban said to him, “You are indeed my own flesh and blood.” So Jacob stayed with him for a month. 15Then Laban said to Jacob, “Should you work for me for nothing because you are my relative? Tell me what your wages should be.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-14Verses 9-14 See Rachel's humility and industry. Nobody needs to be ashamed of honest, useful labour, nor ought it to hinder any one's preferment. When Jacob understood that this was his kinswoman, he was very ready to serve her. Laban, though not the best humoured, bade him welcome, and was satisfied with the account Jacob gave of himself. While we avoid being foolishly ready to believe every thing which is told us, we must take heed of being uncharitably…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-35These chapters describe how God fulfilled his promise by greatly blessing Jacob with a family and possessions. God also disciplined Jacob, leaving him to struggle with Laban for many years. Laban was Jacob’s match in deception, and thus a means of correction. The story of Jacob and Laban is similar to Israel's later stay in Egypt. Jacob struggled while serving his uncle but finally emerged with a large family (the founders of the 12 tribes) and great…Read the comment
