Context of 2 Samuel 12:26
24So David comforted his wife Bathsheba. He went to her and had marital relations with her. She gave birth to a son, and David named him Solomon. Now the Lord loved the child 25and sent word through Nathan the prophet that he should be named Jedidiah for the Lord’s sake. So Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal city. 27Joab then sent messengers to David, saying, “I have fought against Rabbah and have captured the water supply of the city. 28So now assemble the rest of the army and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city and it will be named for me.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26And took the royal city - How can this be, when Joab sent to David to come to take the city, in consequence of which David did come and take that city? The explanation seems to be this: Rabbah was composed of a city and citadel; the former, in which was the king's residence, Joab had taken, and supposed he could soon render himself master of the latter, and therefore sends to David to come and take it, lest, he taking the whole, the city should be called…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-31Verses 26-31 To be thus severe in putting the children of Ammon to slavery was a sign that David's heart was not yet made soft by repentance, at the time when this took place. We shall be most compassionate, kind, and forgiving to others, when we most feel our need of the Lord's forgiving love, and taste the sweetness of it in our own souls.Read the comment
