Context of 2 Samuel 10:1
Later the king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him. 2David said, “I will express my loyalty to Hanun son of Nahash just as his father was loyal to me.” So David sent his servants with a message expressing sympathy over his father’s death. When David’s servants entered the land of the Ammonites, 3the Ammonite officials said to their lord Hanun, “Do you really think David is trying to honor your father by sending these messengers to express his sympathy? No, David has sent his servants to you to get information about the city and spy on it so they can overthrow it!”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1The king - In marginal reference. Nahash, king, etc. The interval between the two events, not less than 50 years, and possibly more, is against his being the same as the Nahash of 1 Samuel 11:1-15. The Ammonites are almost always spoken of as the children of Ammon, from the name of their first ancestor Ben-ammi Genesis 19:38. Hanun - The equivalent of the Carthaginian Hanno, from the same root as the Hebrew, Hananiah, Johanan, Hannah, etc. The same name…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1David's messengers ill-treated by Hanun. (1-5) The Ammonites defeated. (6-14) The Syrians defeated. (15-19) Verses 1-5 Nahash had been an enemy to Israel, yet had showed kindness to David. David therefore resolves gratefully to return it. If a Pharisee gives alms in pride, though God will not reward it, yet he that receives the alms ought to return thanks for it. Those who bear ill-will to their neighbours, are resolved not to believe that their…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1Some time later: King Hadadezer appears in 2 Samuel 10:1–19 as a strong opponent of David (2 Samuel 10:16). This seems surprising, because David had already defeated Hadadezer earlier and taken plunder from his city (2 Samuel 8:3; 7, 12). There are two possible explanations. Either Hadadezer was still alive, rebuilt his forces, and rebelled again in 2 Samuel 10:1–19. Or, 10:1–19 explains in more detail the events summarized in 8:1–18 and prepares the…Read the comment

Then said David, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me--It is probable that this was the Nahash against whom Saul waged war at Jabesh-gilead (1Sa 11:11). David, on leaving Gath, where his life was exposed to danger, found an asylum with the king of Moab; and as Nahash, king of the Ammonites, was his nearest neighbor, it…Read the comment
