Context of 1 Kings 22:48
46He removed from the land any male cultic prostitutes who had managed to survive the reign of his father Asa. 47There was no king in Edom at this time; a governor ruled. Jehoshaphat built a fleet of large merchant ships to travel to Ophir for gold, but they never made the voyage because they were shipwrecked in Ezion Geber. 49Then Ahaziah son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, “Let my sailors join yours in the fleet,” but Jehoshaphat refused. 50Jehoshaphat passed away and was buried with his ancestors in the city of his ancestor David. His son Jehoram replaced him as king.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 48Ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold - In the parallel place ( 2 Chronicles 20:36;) it is said that Jehoshaphat joined himself to Ahaziah, to make ships to go to Tharshish; and they made the ships in Ezion-geber. Concerning these places, and the voyage thither, see the notes on 1 Kings 9:26-28; (note); 1 Kings 10:11; (note), 1 Kings 10:22; (note). - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 48The expression, “ships of Tharshish,” probably designates ships of a particular class, ships (i. e.) like those with which the Phoenicians used to trade to Tharshish (Tartessus, 1 Kings 10:22 note). - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 48-49Jehoshaphat built a fleet of trading ships with Ahaziah (see 2 Chronicles 20:35–37). Like Solomon, they planned to send ships to Ophir for gold (1 Kings 9:27–28; 10:11). But the plan failed. To fulfill a prophetic warning (2 Chronicles 20:37), the Lord destroyed the fleet before it left port. Jehoshaphat wisely refused to join with Ahaziah again. Ezion-geber was Solomon’s port city on the Gulf of Aqaba (1 Kings 9:26).Read the comment
