Context of Psalms 78:66
64His priests were cut down with swords. The widows ⌞of his priests⌟ could not even weep ⌞for them⌟. 65Then the Lord woke up like one who had been sleeping, like a warrior sobering up from ⌞too much⌟ wine. He struck his enemies from behind and disgraced them forever. 67He rejected the tent of Joseph. He did not choose the tribe of Ephraim, 68but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he loved.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 66And he smote his enemies in the hinder part - From behind; that is, as they fled. He put them to a perpetual reproach - As discomfited; as defeated and scattered; as unable to contend with him. The allusion is, probably, to the victories of David, occurring after the events related in the preceding verses.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 56-72Verses 56-72 After the Israelites were settled in Canaan, the children were like their fathers. God gave them his testimonies, but they turned back.
