Context of Psalms 78:66
64Their priests fell by the sword; And their widows made no lamentation. 65Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, Like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine. And he smote his adversaries backward: He put them to a perpetual reproach. 67Moreover he refused the tent of Joseph, And chose not the tribe of Ephraim, 68But chose the tribe of Judah, The mount Zion which he loved.

He put them to a perpetual reproach - As discomfited; as defeated and scattered; as unable to contend with him. The allusion is, probably, to the victories of David, occurring after the events related in the preceding verses.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 56-72Verses 56-72 After the Israelites were settled in Canaan, the children were like their fathers. God gave them his testimonies, but they turned back.
