Context of Psalms 42:8
6My soul is discouraged. That is why I will remember you in the land of Jordan, on the peaks of Hermon, on Mount Mizar. 7One deep sea calls to another at the roar of your waterspouts. All the whitecaps on your waves have swept over me. The Lord commands his mercy during the day, and at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life. 9I will ask God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I walk around in mourning while the enemy oppresses me?” 10With a shattering blow to my bones, my enemies taunt me. They ask me all day long, “Where is your God?”

Commentaries on Psalms 42:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8The Lord will command - Every day the Lord will give an especial commission to his loving-kindness to visit me. During the night I shall sing of his mercy and goodness; and alternately mingle my singing with prayer for a continuance of his mercy, and for power to make the best use of these visitations.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Yet the Lord will command his loving-kindness in the daytime - literally, “By day the Lord will command his mercy;” that is, he will so order or direct his mercy or his favor. The word “daytime” here refers evidently to prosperity; and the expectation of the psalmist was that a time of prosperity would return; that he might hope for better days; that the loving-kindness of God would again be manifested to him. He did not wholly despair. He expected to see…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-11Verses 6-11 The way to forget our miseries, is to remember the God of our mercies. David saw troubles coming from God's wrath, and that discouraged him. But if one trouble follow hard after another, if all seem to combine for our ruin, let us remember they are all appointed and overruled by the Lord. David regards the Divine favour as the fountain of all the good he looked for. In the Saviour's name let us hope and pray. One word from him will calm every…Read the comment
