Context of Proverbs 30:29
27Locusts have no king, yet all of them divide into swarms by instinct. 28A lizard you can hold in your hands, yet it can even be found in royal palaces. There are three things that walk with dignity, even four that march with dignity: 30a lion, mightiest among animals, which turns away from nothing, 31a strutting rooster, a male goat, a king at the head of his army.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29There be three things which go well - Here is another set of emblems; four things which walk beautifully and with majesty. 1. The lion. 2. The greyhound. 3. The he-goat. And, 4. A king. Nothing can be more majestic than the walk of the lion. It is deliberate, equal, firm, and in every respect becoming the king of the forest. The greyhound. מתנים זרזיר zarzir mothnayim, the girt in the loins; but what this beast is we do not distinctly know. It is most…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-33Verses 29-33 We may learn from animals to go well; also to keep our temper under all provocations. We must keep the evil thought in our minds from breaking out into evil speeches. We must not stir up the passions of others. Let nothing be said or done with violence, but every thing with softness and calmness. Alas, how often have we done foolishly in rising up against the Lord our King! Let us humble ourselves before him. And having found peace with Him…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 24-3124-31. These verses provide two classes of apt illustrations of various aspects of the moral world, which the reader is left to apply. By the first (Pr 30:25-28), diligence and providence are commended; the success of these insignificant animals being due to their instinctive sagacity and activity, rather than strength. The other class (Pr 30:30, 31) provides similes for whatever is majestic or comely, uniting efficiency with gracefulness.Read the comment
