Context of Proverbs 30:29

27Locusts have no king to lead them, but they all fly together as one. 28Lizards are easy to catch with your hand, but you will see them in kings' palaces. There are three things that seem great as they walk around, even four things: 30Lions are the strongest of all animals, and they are not afraid of anything. 31Cockerels that shout proudly. Male goats. A king who has his army with him.

Commentaries on Proverbs 30:29

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29There be three things which go well - Here is another set of emblems; four things which walk beautifully and with majesty. 1. The lion. 2. The greyhound. 3. The he-goat. And, 4. A king. Nothing can be more majestic than the walk of the lion. It is deliberate, equal, firm, and in every respect becoming the king of the forest. The greyhound. מתנים זרזיר zarzir mothnayim, the girt in the loins; but what this beast is we do not distinctly know. It is most…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-33Verses 29-33 We may learn from animals to go well; also to keep our temper under all provocations. We must keep the evil thought in our minds from breaking out into evil speeches. We must not stir up the passions of others. Let nothing be said or done with violence, but every thing with softness and calmness. Alas, how often have we done foolishly in rising up against the Lord our King! Let us humble ourselves before him. And having found peace with Him…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 24-3124-31. These verses provide two classes of apt illustrations of various aspects of the moral world, which the reader is left to apply. By the first (Pr 30:25-28), diligence and providence are commended; the success of these insignificant animals being due to their instinctive sagacity and activity, rather than strength. The other class (Pr 30:30, 31) provides similes for whatever is majestic or comely, uniting efficiency with gracefulness.Read the comment
