Context of Numbers 5:2
1The Lord said to Moses, “Command the Israelites to send outside the camp anyone who has a serious skin disease or a discharge or anyone who is unclean from touching a dead body. 3Send all of these unclean men and women outside the camp. They must not make this camp where I live among you unclean.” 4So the Israelites did as the Lord had told Moses. They sent these unclean people outside the camp.

But the expulsion mentioned here was founded, On a purely physical reason, viz., the diseases were…Read the comment

Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper--The exclusion of leprous persons from the camp in the wilderness, as from cities and villages afterwards, was a sanitary measure taken according to prescribed rules (Le 13:1-14:57). This exclusion of lepers from society has been acted upon ever since; and it affords almost the only instance in which any kind of attention is paid in the East to the prevention of contagion.
