Context of Joshua 23:6
4I have given you the territory of the nations that still remain as an inheritance for your tribes. This includes the territory of all the nations I have already destroyed from the Jordan River westward to the Mediterranean Sea. 5The Lord your God will expel them right in front of your eyes and force them out of your way. You will take their land as the Lord your God told you. Now you must be very strong to keep and to do everything written in the Book of Moses’ Teachings. Don’t turn away from them. 7Don’t get mixed up with the nations left in your territory. Don’t ever mention the names of their gods or swear an oath to them. Don’t ever serve their gods or bow down to them. 8But you must be loyal to the Lord your God, as you have been until now.

Commentaries on Joshua 23:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do, etc. - It requires no small courage to keep a sound creed in the midst of scoffers, and not less to maintain a godly practice among the profane and profligate. That is written in the book - By the word of God alone his followers are bound. Nothing is to be received as an article of faith which God has not spoken.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6Before Israel crossed the Jordan River to take the land of Canaan, Joshua had followed one guiding principle. He was careful to obey everything that Moses had written and not turn away from it. Now, as Joshua prepared to die, he passed these same instructions on to the leaders who would come after him. He urged them to lead Israel by obeying God’s instruction with the same care and faithfulness.Read the comment
