Context of Job 35:7
5“Look at the heavens and see. Observe the clouds high above you. 6If you’ve sinned, what effect can you have on God? If you’ve done many wrongs, what can you do to him? If you’re righteous, what can you give him, or what can he get from you? 8Your wickedness affects only someone like yourself. Your righteousness affects only the descendants of Adam. 9The weight of oppression makes them cry out. The power of mighty people makes them call for help.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? - The same sentiment substantially as in the previous verses. It is, that God is supreme and independent. He does not desire such benefits from the services of his friends and is not so dependent on them; as to be induced to interpose in their favor, in any way beyond what is strictly proper. It is to be presumed, therefore, that he will deal with them according to what is right, and as it is right that they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-8Elihu tried to answer his own question (35:2). But his response did not add anything new compared to: Zophar (11:8–9). Eliphaz (22:12). Bildad (25:5–6). Job (9:8–10). Elihu did not realize that all sin offends God (Genesis 39:9; Matthew 25:41–46; compare Proverbs 19:17).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-85-8. Elihu like Eliphaz (Job 22:2, 3, 12) shows that God is too exalted in nature to be susceptible of benefit or hurt from the righteousness or sin of men respectively; it is themselves that they benefit by righteousness, or hurt by sin. behold the clouds, which are higher than thou--spoken with irony. Not only are they higher than thou, but thou canst not even reach them clearly with the eye. Yet these are not as high as God's seat. God is therefore too…Read the comment
