Context of Isaiah 1:8
6From the bottom of your feet to the top of your head there is no healthy spot left on your ⌞body⌟— only bruises, sores, and fresh wounds. They haven’t been cleansed, bandaged, or soothed with oil. 7“Your country is devastated. Your cities are burned down. Your fields are destroyed right before your eyes by foreigners. Your fields are devastated and taken over by foreigners. My people Zion are left like a hut in a vineyard, like a shack in a cucumber field, like a city under attack.” 9If the Lord of Armies hadn’t left us a few survivors, we would have been like Sodom and Gomorrah. 10Listen to the Lord’s word, you rulers of Sodom! Pay attention to the teachings from our God, you people of Gomorrah!

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8As a cottage in a vineyard "As a shed in a vineyard" - A little temporary hut covered with boughs, straw, turf, or the like materials, for a shelter from the heat by day, and the cold and dews by night, for the watchman that kept the garden or vineyard during the short season the fruit was ripening, (see Job 27:18;), and presently removed when it had served that purpose. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8And the daughter of Zion - Zion, or Sion, was the name of one of the hills on which the city of Jerusalem was built. It was in the southern part of the city. As Zion became the residence of the court, and was the most important part of the city, the name was often used to denote the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8the Daughter of Zion: Zion, one of the hills on which Jerusalem stands, often served as another name for Jerusalem. Zion symbolized God's presence (Psalm 46), his protection of his people, and Jerusalem's strength against enemies. Now, however, the opposite is true. Jerusalem has become weak, like a helpless city under siege and like an abandoned shelter or a shack.Read the comment
