Context of Isaiah 1:8
6From the bottom of your feet, to the top of your head, everywhere hurts! There are wounds all over your body that are still bleeding. Nobody has cleaned your wounds or covered them. Nobody has put olive oil on them to make them better. 7Your land has become useless. Fire has destroyed your towns and cities. Foreign people have taken the crops from your fields, while you stood there and watched. Strangers have destroyed everything in your country. Jerusalem is now like a hut in a vineyard or in a field of crops. It stands there alone, with its enemies all round it. 9Unless the Lord Almighty had left some of us alive, we would have become like Sodom. We would have been completely destroyed, like Gomorrah. 10Yes, you are like the rulers of Sodom, so listen to the Lord's message! You are no better than the people in Gomorrah! So listen to what our God is saying to you.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8As a cottage in a vineyard "As a shed in a vineyard" - A little temporary hut covered with boughs, straw, turf, or the like materials, for a shelter from the heat by day, and the cold and dews by night, for the watchman that kept the garden or vineyard during the short season the fruit was ripening, (see Job 27:18;), and presently removed when it had served that purpose. It was in the southern part of the city. As Zion became the residence of the court, and was the most important part of the city, the name was often used to denote the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8the Daughter of Zion: Zion, one of the hills on which Jerusalem stands, often served as another name for Jerusalem. Zion symbolized God's presence (Psalm 46), his protection of his people, and Jerusalem's strength against enemies. Now, however, the opposite is true. Jerusalem has become weak, like a helpless city under siege and like an abandoned shelter or a shack.Read the comment
