Context of Ezekiel 4:11

9“Then take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and winter wheat. Put them in a container, and use them to make bread for yourself. Eat it during the 390 days that you are lying on your side. 10The food that you eat should be weighed. Eat eight ounces of food every day at set times. Measure out two-thirds of a quart of water, and drink it at set times. 12Eat the bread as you would eat barley loaves. Bake the bread in front of people, using human excrement for fuel.” 13Then the Lord said, “In the same way, the people of Israel will eat unclean bread among the nations where I scatter them.”

Commentaries on Ezekiel 4:11

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Water by measure - This probably corresponds to the water of affliction 1 Kings 22:27; Isaiah 30:20. The measure of the hin is variously estimated by Jewish writers. The sixth part of a hin will be according to one estimate about 610ths, according to another 910ths of a pint. The lesser estimate is more suitable here.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-17Verses 9-17 The bread which was Ezekiel's support, was to be made of coarse grain and pulse mixed together, seldom used except in times of urgent scarcity, and of this he was only to take a small quantity. Thus was figured the extremity to which the Jews were to be reduced during the siege and captivity. Ezekiel does not plead, Lord, from my youth I have been brought up delicately, and never used to any thing like this; but that he had been brought up…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-17The near-starvation diet of eight ounces of food and a jar of water each day represents siege rations. This reflects a desperate situation where there was not enough of any one type of grain to make a whole loaf.Read the comment
