Context of Ezekiel 39:9
7I will make my holy name known among my people Israel, and I will never let them dishonor my holy name again. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. 8“ ‘It’s coming! It will happen! declares the Almighty Lord. This is the day I have spoken about. Those living in the cities of Israel will go out. They will set fire to weapons and burn them. They will burn small and large shields, bows and arrows, and war clubs and spears. They will burn them for seven years. 10They will not need to get wood from the field or cut down trees in the woods. They will make fires with the weapons. They will loot those who looted them, and they will grab things back from those who grabbed their things, declares the Almighty Lord. 11“ ‘When that day comes, I will give Gog a burial place in Israel. It will be in Travelers Valley, east of the Dead Sea. It will block those who travel ⌞through the valley⌟. Gog and his whole army will be buried there. So it will be called the valley of Gog’s troops.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 39:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9And shall set on fire - the weapons - The Israelites shall make bonfires and fuel of the weapons, tents, etc., which the defeated Syrians shall leave behind them, as expressive of the joy which they shall feel for the destruction of their enemies; and to keep up, in their culinary consumption, the memory of this great event. They shall burn them with fire seven years - These may be figurative expressions, after the manner of the Asiatics, whose language…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Burn them with fire - Or, “kindle fire with them;” or, as in the margin. The weapons of the army left on the field of battle shall be so numerous as to supply fuel for the people of the land for seven years. Seven was a number connected with cleansing after contact with the dead (Numbers 19:11 ff), and this purification of the land by the clearance of paganish spoils was a holy work (compare Ezekiel 39:12).Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10Israel would act only after Gog had been fully defeated and destroyed. Like some great battles in the past, the people would first watch the Lord fight for them. Then they would gather what was left behind (for example, 2 Kings 6:1–7:20; 2 Chronicles 20). Fire from heaven would destroy Gog’s army. Only their wooden weapons would remain. Israel would use these weapons as firewood for seven years. In the Old Testament, the number seven often represents…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-109-10. The burning of the foe's weapons implies that nothing belonging to them should be left to pollute the land. The seven years (seven being the sacred number) spent on this work, implies the completeness of the cleansing, and the people's zeal for purity. How different from the ancient Israelites, who left not merely the arms, but the heathen themselves, to remain among them [Fairbairn], (Jud 1:27, 28; 2:2, 3; Psa 106:34-36). The desolation by…Read the comment
