Context of Deuteronomy 9:21
19I was terrified of the Lord’s anger and fury. He was so angry he wanted to destroy you. But once more the Lord listened to me. 20The Lord also became very angry with Aaron and wanted to destroy him. But at that time I prayed for Aaron, too. I took that sinful calf you made and burned it. I crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as powder. Then I threw the powder into the river that flowed down the mountain. 22You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth Hattaavah. 23When the Lord sent you from Kadesh Barnea, he said, “Go and take possession of the land I’m giving you.” But you rebelled against the Lord your God’s word. You didn’t believe him or obey him.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-29Verses 7-29 That the Israelites might have no pretence to think that God brought them to Canaan for their righteousness, Moses shows what a miracle of mercy it was, that they had not been destroyed in the wilderness. It is good for us often to remember against ourselves, with sorrow and shame, our former sins; that we may see how much we are indebted to free grace, and may humbly own that we never merited any thing but wrath and the curse at God's hand…Read the comment

Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people ... have corrupted themselves--With a view to humble them effectually, Moses proceeds to particularize some of the most atrocious instances of their infidelity. He begins with the impiety of the golden calf--an impiety which, while their miraculous emancipation from Egypt, the most stupendous displays of the Divine Majesty that were exhibited on the adjoining mount, and the recent ratification…Read the comment
