Context of Deuteronomy 8:7
5Learn this lesson by heart: The Lord your God was disciplining you as parents discipline their children. 6Obey the commands of the Lord your God. Follow his directions, and fear him. The Lord your God is bringing you into a good land. It is a land with rivers that don’t dry up. There are springs and underground streams flowing through the valleys and hills. 8The land has wheat and barley, grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates. The land has honey and olive trees for olive oil. 9The land will have enough food for you, and you will have everything you need. The land has rocks with iron ore, and you will be able to mine copper ore in the hills.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7-9Verses 7-9 See Exodus 3:8 note, and the contrast expressed in Deuteronomy 11:10-11, between Palestine and Egypt. The physical characteristics and advantages of a country like Palestine must have been quite strange to Israel at the time Moses was speaking: compare Deuteronomy 3:25 note. To have praised the fertility and excellence of the promised land at an earlier period would have increased the murmurings and impatience of the people at being detained in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-20After Israel settled in the land, they might begin to think that their success came from their own strength and skill. This is a common human tendency.
