Context of 2 Samuel 15:13
11Two hundred men invited from Jerusalem went with Absalom. They went innocently, knowing nothing ⌞about Absalom’s plans⌟. 12While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel, David’s adviser, to come from his home in Giloh. Meanwhile, the conspiracy grew stronger, and the number of people siding with Absalom kept getting larger. Someone came to tell David, “The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom.” 14David told all his men who were with him in Jerusalem, “Let’s flee immediately, or none of us will escape from Absalom. Let’s leave right away, or he’ll catch up to us and bring disaster on us when he massacres the city.” 15The king’s servants told him, “No matter what happens, we are Your Majesty’s servants.”

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 15:13
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom - It is very difficult to account for this general defection of the people. Several reasons are given: David was old or afflicted, and could not well attend to the administration of justice in the land. It does appear that the king did not attend to the affairs of state, and that there were no properly appointed judges in the land; see 2 Samuel 15:3. Joab's power was overgrown; he was wicked and insolent…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-23Verses 13-23 David determined to quit Jerusalem. He took this resolve, as a penitent submitting to the rod. Before unrighteous Absalom he could justify himself, and stand out; but before the righteous God he must condemn himself, and yield to his judgments. Thus he accepts the punishment of his sin. And good men, when they themselves suffer, are anxious that others should not be led to suffer with them. He compelled none; those whose hearts were with…Read the comment
