Context of 2 Samuel 13:21
19Tamar put ashes on her head, tore the long-sleeved gown she had on, put her hands on her head, and went away crying. 20Her brother Absalom asked her, “Has your brother Amnon been with you? Sister, be quiet for now. He’s your brother. Don’t dwell on this matter.” So Tamar stayed there at the home of her brother Absalom and was depressed. When King David heard about this, he became very angry. But David didn’t punish his son Amnon. He favored Amnon because he was his firstborn son. 22Absalom wouldn’t speak at all to Amnon. He hated Amnon for raping his sister Tamar. 23Two years later Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal Hazor near Ephraim. He invited all the king’s sons.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21But when King David heard - To this verse the Septuagint add the following words: ̔ , ̔ , ̔ ; "But he would not grieve the soul of Amnon his son, for he loved him, because he was his first-born." The same addition is found in the Vulgate and in Josephus, and it is possible that this once made a part of the Hebrew text.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21The Septuagint adds, what is a good explanation, “but he did not vex the spirit of Amnon his son, because he loved him, because he was his first-born.” This want of justice in David‘s conduct, and favoritism to Amnon, probably rankled in Absalom‘s heart, and was the first seed of his after rebellion.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-29Verses 21-29 Observe the aggravations of Absalom's sin: he would have Ammon slain, when least fit to go out of the world. He engaged his servants in the guilt. Those servants are ill-taught who obey wicked masters, against God's commands. Indulged children always prove crosses to godly parents, whose foolish love leads them to neglect their duty to God.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21King David … was furious: David was deeply angry about what happened, but he does not seem to have punished Amnon. Some ancient texts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Greek version, add an explanation. They say David did not punish Amnon because he loved him. Another possibility is that David, who had committed sexual sin himself (see 2 Samuel 11:1–12:24), felt unable to judge his son for a similar offense. A third possibility is that David saw…Read the comment
