Context of 2 Samuel 12:24
22David answered, “As long as the child was alive, I fasted and cried. I thought, ‘Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.’ 23But why should I fast now that he’s dead? Can I bring him back? ⌞Someday⌟ I’ll go to him, but he won’t come back to me.” Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba. He went to bed with her, and she later gave birth to a son. David named him Solomon. The Lord loved the child 25and sent a message through the prophet Nathan to name the baby Jedidiah [The Lord’s Beloved]. 26Meanwhile, Joab fought against the Ammonite city of Rabbah and captured its royal fortress.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 12:24
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24David comforted Bath-sheba - His extraordinary attachment to this beautiful woman was the cause of all his misfortunes. He called his name Solomon - This name seems to have been given prophetically, for שלמה sholomah signifies peaceable, and there was almost uninterrupted peace during his reign.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24Solomon - Or “peaceable,” a name given to him at his circumcision. Compare Luke 1:59. The giving of the name Jedidiah, by the Lord through Nathan, signified God‘s favor to the child, as in the cases of Abraham, Sarah, and Israel. The name Jedidiah (which contains the same root as the name David, namely, “to love”) indicated, prophetically, what God‘s Providence brought about actually, namely, the succession and glorious reign of Solomon over Israel.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-25Verses 15-25 David now penned the 51st Psalm, in which, though he had been assured that his sin was pardoned, he prays earnestly for pardon, and greatly laments his sin. He was willing to bear the shame of it, to have it ever before him, to be continually upbraided with it. God gives us leave to be earnest with him in prayer for particular blessings, from trust in his power and general mercy, though we have no particular promise to build upon. David…Read the comment

Solomon: In Hebrew, Solomon’s name is pronounced Shelomoh. It likely means “his peace,” from the Hebrew word shalom (peace). The name may also mean “his replacement.” This meaning comes from the Hebrew root shelem, which can mean “replacement” or “compensation.” Similar names include Shelemiah (Jeremiah…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 24-2524-25. Bath-sheba ... bare a son, and he called his name Solomon--that is, "peaceable." But Nathan gave him the name of Jedediah, by command of God, or perhaps only as an expression of God's love. This love and the noble gifts with which he was endowed, considering the criminality of the marriage from which he sprang, is a remarkable instance of divine goodness and grace. 2Sa 12:26-31.
