Context of 2 Chronicles 14:12
10Asa went to confront him, and the two armies set up their battle lines in the Zephathah Valley at Mareshah. 11Asa called on the Lord his God. He said, “Lord, there is no one except you who can help those who are not strong so that they can fight against a large ⌞army⌟. Help us, Lord our God, because we are depending on you. In your name we go against this large crowd. You are the Lord our God. Don’t let anyone successfully oppose you.” The Lord attacked the Sudanese army in front of Asa and Judah. The Sudanese army fled. 13Asa and his troops pursued them as far as Gerar. Many of the Sudanese died in battle. As a result, the Sudanese army couldn’t fight again. It was crushed in front of the Lord and his army. The Lord’s army captured a lot of goods. 14It attacked all the cities around Gerar because the cities were afraid of the Lord. The army looted all the cities because there were many things to take.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12The defeat of Zerah is one of the most remarkable events in the history of the Jews. On no other occasion did they meet in the field and overcome the forces of either of the two great monarchies between which they were placed. It was seldom that they ventured to resist, unless behind walls. Shishak, Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, Nebuchadnezzar, were either unopposed or only opposed in this way. On the one other occasion on which they took the field - under…Read the comment

The term Cushite might refer to someone from southern Egypt (Nubia) or a Midianite area northeast of Aqabah (see Numbers 12:1; Habakkuk 3:7). However, several things suggest that Zerah was Egyptian: The mention of Libya in 2 Chronicles 16:8 The battle's size (similar to Shishak's attack on Rehoboam in 2…Read the comment

Committing his cause to God, he engaged in the conflict--completely routed the enemy, and succeeded in obtaining, as the reward of his victory, a rich booty in treasure and cattle from…Read the comment
