Context of 2 Chronicles 1:9
7That night God appeared to Solomon. He said, “What can I give you?” 8Solomon responded to God, “You’ve shown great love to my father David, and you’ve made me king in his place. Now, Lord God, you’ve kept the promise you made to my father David. You’ve made me king of people who are as numerous as specks of dust on the ground. 10Give me wisdom and knowledge so that I may lead these people. After all, who can judge this great people of yours?” 11God replied to Solomon, “I know this request is from your heart. You didn’t ask for riches, fortunes, honor, or the death of those who hate you. You didn’t even ask for a long life. Instead, you’ve asked for wisdom and knowledge to judge my people, over whom I made you king.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Let thy promise - דברך debarcha, thy word; פתגמך pithgamach, Targum. It is very remarkable that when either God or man is represented as having spoken a word then the noun פתגם pithgam is used by the Targumist; but when word is used personally, then he employs the noun מימרא meymera, which appears to answer to the of St. John, John 1:1, etc.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7-12Verses 7-12 The verbal differences between this passage and the corresponding one of Kings 1 Kings 3:5-14 are very considerable, and indicate the general truth that the object of the sacred historians is to give a true account of the real bearing of what was said: not ordinarily to furnish us with all or the exact words that were uttered. The most important point omitted in Chronicles, and supplied by Kings, is the conditional promise of long life made to…Read the comment
