Please give us and your son David anything you can ⌞spare⌟.’ ” 9When David’s young men came to Nabal, they repeated all of this to him for David, and then they waited. “Who is David?” Nabal answered David’s servants. “Who is Jesse’s son? Commentaries on 1 Samuel 25:10
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10Who is David? - Nabal's answer shows the surliness of his disposition. It was unjust to refuse so reasonable a request; and the manner of the refusal was highly insulting. It is true what his own servants said of him, He is such a son of Belial that one cannot speak to him, 1 Samuel 25:17.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 2-11Verses 2-11 We should not have heard of Nabal, if nothing had passed between him and David. Observe his name, Nabal, "A fool;" so it signifies. Riches make men look great in the eye of the world; but to one that takes right views, Nabal looked very mean. He had no honour or honesty; he was churlish, cross, and ill-humoured; evil in his doings, hard and oppressive; a man that cared not what fraud and violence he used in getting and saving. What little…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10son of Jesse: This phrase refers to David. Like Saul, Nabal used this description in a disrespectful way. He avoided using David’s name to show contempt rather than honor (1 Samuel 20:27, 31; 22:7).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 10-1210-12. Nabal answered David's servants, ... Who is David? &c.--Nabal's answer seems to indicate that the country was at the time in a loose and disorderly state. David's own good conduct, however, as well as the important services rendered by him and his men, were readily attested by Nabal's servants. The preparations of David to chastise his insolent language and ungrateful requital are exactly what would be done in the present day by Arab chiefs, who…Read the comment
