Context of 1 Samuel 10:19
17Samuel called the people to ⌞come into the presence of⌟ the Lord at Mizpah. 18He said to the Israelites, “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: I brought Israel out of Egypt and rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and all the kings who were oppressing you. But now you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and distresses. You said, ‘No! Place a king over us.’ Now then, stand in front of the Lord by your tribes and family groups.” 20When Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. 21When he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward by families, the family of Matri was chosen. Then Saul, the son of Kish, was chosen. They looked for him but couldn’t find him.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19Present yourselves - by your tribes - It appears that, in order to find out the proper person who should be made their king, they must determine by lot: The tribe. The thousands or grand divisions by families. The smaller divisions by families. And, The individual. When the lot was cast for the tribe, Benjamin was taken; when for the thousand, the division of Matri was taken; when for the family, the family of Kish was taken; when for the individual…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-27Verses 17-27 Samuel tells the people, Ye have this day rejected your God. So little fond was Saul now of that power, which soon after, when he possessed it, he could not think of parting with, that he hid himself. It is good to be conscious of our unworthiness and insufficiency for the services to which we are called; but men should not go into the contrary extreme, by refusing the employments to which the Lord and the church call them.
