Context of 1 Kings 9:3
1Solomon finished building the Lord’s temple, the royal palace, and everything ⌞else⌟ he wanted to build. 2Then the Lord appeared to him a second time, as he had appeared to him in Gibeon. The Lord said to him, “I have heard your prayer for mercy that you made to me. I have declared that this temple which you have built is holy so that my name may be placed there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. 4“If you will be faithful to me as your father David was (with a sincere and upright heart), do everything I command, and keep my laws and rules, 5then I will establish your royal dynasty over Israel forever as I promised your father David when I said, ‘You will never fail to have an heir on the throne of Israel.’

Commentaries on 1 Kings 9:3
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3The answer given by God to Solomon‘s prayer is reported more fully in 2 Chronicles 7:12-22. When God puts His Name in the temple He does it, in intention, “forever.” He will not arbitrarily withdraw it; there it will remain “forever,” so far as God is concerned. But the people may by unfaithfulness drive it away 1 Kings 9:7-9. And mine eyes and my heart - An answer in excess of the prayer 1 Kings 8:29; “Not Mine eyes only, but Mine eyes and Mine heart.”Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-9The Lord responded to Solomon's prayer by explaining the covenant's conditions. Obedience would lead to prosperity and blessings, while disobedience could cause disaster, including the city's and temple's destruction and the people's exile (see Deuteronomy 28:36–37, 63–68). Although God's covenant was unchangeable, enjoying its blessings required faithfulness to its terms (Psalm 89:24–37).Read the comment
