Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 27:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Asahel the brother of Joab - This verse proves that the division and arrangement mentioned above were made before David was acknowledged king in Hebron; for Asahel, the brother of Joab, who was fourth captain, was slain by Abner, while Ishbosheth reigned over Israel at Mahanaim, 2 Samuel 2:19-23.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Asahel died before the courses, as here described, could have been instituted. Perhaps the arrangements of David in his later years were based upon institutions belonging to the period of his reign at Hebron.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-15David organized his reserve army into twelve divisions. Each division served for one month each year. Their duties likely included protecting borders, policing, maintaining order in conquered areas, manning fortresses, and taking care of military equipment like horses and chariots. The divisions were not based on Israel’s tribal structure. Each division included people from different tribes, showing the kingdom's integration.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Asahel--This officer having been slain at the very beginning of David's reign [2Sa 2:23], his name was probably given to this division in honor of his memory, and his son was invested with the command. 1Ch 27:16-24.
