Context of Isaiah 10:20
18The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the Lord will destroy, both soul and body, and it will be as when a sick man wastes away. 19The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few that a child can write them down. In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20And it shall come to pass - The prophet proceeds to state the effect on the Jews, of the judgment that would overtake the army of the Assyrian. One of those effects, as stated in this verse, would be, that they would be led to see that it was in vain to look to the Assyrians any more for aid, or to form any further alliance with them, but that they should trust in the Lord alone. The remnant of Israel - Those that would be left after the Assyrian had…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-34Verses 20-34 By our afflictions we may learn not to make creatures our confidence. Those only can with comfort stay upon God, who return to him in truth, not in pretence and profession only. God will justly bring this wasting away on a provoking people, but will graciously set bounds to it. It is against the mind and will of God, that his people, whatever happens, should give way to fear. God's anger against his people is but for a moment; and when that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20the survivors: This refers to a small group who remained alive. This group is called a remnant. A remnant is a small number of people who survive after great destruction. A remnant from Jerusalem barely survived. However, their safety was secure because God had promised to preserve them (see Isaiah 1:8–9; 4:2; 6:13; 37:31–32). These wars taught the remnant an important lesson. They were not to depend on powerful nations such as Assyria for help. Instead…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 20-2220-22. The effect on the "remnant" (contrasted with the Assyrian remnant, Is 10:19); namely, those who shall be left after the invasion of Sennacherib, will be a return from dependence on external idolatrous nations, as Assyria and Egypt (2Ki 18:21; 16:7-9), to the God of the theocracy; fulfilled in part in the pious Hezekiah's days; but from the future aspect under which Paul, in Ro 9:27, 28 (compare "short work" with "whole work," Is 10:12, here)…Read the comment
