Context of Psalms 9:5
3Because my enemies have seen your power, they turned back and they fell down. You won against them. 4You showed that I was right. You sat on your throne as a judge who truly decides what is right. Clearly you spoke against the nations. You destroyed the wicked people, so that nobody will remember them ever again. 6Down came the cities of our enemies! You destroyed them for ever. People will just forget them. 7Every day the Lord will rule as king. He sits on his throne as judge.

Commentaries on Psalms 9:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Thou hast rebuked the heathen - We know not what this particularly refers to, but it is most probably to the Canaanitish nations, which God destroyed from off the face of the earth; hence it is said, Thou hast put out their name for ever and ever, ועד לעולם leolam vaed, endlessly. Here עולם olam has its proper signification, without end. He who contends it means only a limited time, let him tell us where the Hivites, Perizzites, Jebusites, etc., now…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Thou hast rebuked the heathen - Not the pagan in general, or the nations at large, but those who are particularly referred to in this psalm - those who are described as the enemies of the writer and of God. On the word rendered “heathen” here - גוים gôyim - see the notes at Psalm 2:1. The word rebuke here does not mean, as it does usually with us, to chide with words, but it means that he had done this by deeds; that is, by overcoming or vanquishing…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5God created the heavens and the earth with a word (Genesis 1), and he can end nations with a word (see Psalm 2:5). Those who do evil will not endure forever. God promises that their power and influence will come to an end (Psalm 69:28; Psalm 109:13; Revelation 21:4).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-53-5. When ... are turned back--It is the result of God's power alone. He, as a righteous Judge (Psa 7:11), vindicates His people. He rebukes by acts as well as words (Psa 6:1; 18:15), and so effectually as to destroy the names of nations as well as persons.Read the comment
