Context of Psalms 69:22
20When they insult me, it makes me very upset. I feel helpless. I hoped that someone would be kind and help me, but there was nobody. I wanted someone to comfort me, but I did not find anyone. 21Instead, my enemies put poison in my food. When I was thirsty, they gave me vinegar to drink. Please God, cause their feasts to become a trap for them. Let it bring trouble to them and their friends. 23Let their eyes be in the dark so that they cannot see. Let their bodies become weak. 24Yes, punish them, because you are so angry with them!

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22Let their table become a snare - The execrations here and in the following verses should be read in the future tense, because they are predictive; and not in the imperative mood, as if they were the offspring of the psalmist's resentment: "Their table Shall become a snare; - their eyes Shall be darkened; - thou Wilt pour out thine indignation upon them; - thy wrathful anger Shall take hold of them; - their habitation Shall be desolate, - and none Shall…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22Let their table become a snare before them - These verses are quoted by Paul Romans 11:9-10 as descriptive of the character of persons in his time, or as “language” which would express what he desired to say. See the passage explained at length in the notes at Romans 11:9-10. The whole passage is a prayer that they might receive a proper recompense for what they had done. The word “table” here means the table at which they were accustomed to eat. As they…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-29Verses 22-29 These are prophecies of the destruction of Christ's persecutors. Verses #(22-23), are applied to the judgments of God upon the unbelieving Jews, in Ro 11:9, 10. When the supports of life and delights of sense, through the corruption of our nature, are made the food and fuel of sin, then our table is a snare. Their sin was, that they would not see, but shut their eyes against the light, loving darkness rather; their punishment was, that they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22-23The psalmist asks God to give his suffering (Psalm 69:3) to his enemies. Paul applied these words to the unbelieving Jews of his day (Romans 11:9–10).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22-2322-23. With unimportant verbal changes, this language is used by Paul to describe the rejection of the Jews who refused to receive the Saviour (Ro 11:9, 10). The purport of the figures used is that blessings shall become curses, the "table" of joy (as one of food) a "snare," their welfare--literally, "peaceful condition," or security, a "trap." Darkened eyes and failing strength complete the picture of the ruin falling on them under the invoked…Read the comment
