Context of Psalms 56:9
7God, they want to do wicked things, so punish them! Destroy these people, because you are angry with them. 8Every time that I am upset, you know about it. Put all my tears in your bottle! Yes, write down every tear in your book. When I call to you for help, my enemies will turn back. I am sure of this: God is with me, to fight for me. 10By God's help, I will praise his promise. Yes, by the Lord's help, I will praise his word. 11I am not afraid, because I trust in God. People can do nothing to hurt me.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back - As soon as they know that I call upon thee, then, knowing that thou wilt hear and save, my enemies will immediately take flight. The cry of faith and prayer to God is more dreadful to our spiritual foes than the war-whoop of the Indian is to his surprised brother savages. This I know - I have often had experience of the Divine interposition; and I know it will be so now, for God is with me. He who…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9When I cry unto thee - This expresses strong confidence in prayer. The psalmist felt that he had only to cry unto God, to secure the overthrow of his enemies. God had all power, and his power would be put forth in answer to prayer. Then shall mine enemies turn back - Then shall they cease to pursue and persecute me. He did not doubt that this would be the ultimate result - that this blessing would be conferred, though it might be delayed, and though his…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 The heavy and continued trials through which many of the Lord's people have passed, should teach us to be silent and patient under lighter crosses. Yet we are often tempted to repine and despond under small sorrows. For this we should check ourselves. David comforts himself, in his distress and fear, that God noticed all his grievances and all his griefs. God has a bottle and a book for his people's tears, both the tears for their sins, and…Read the comment
