Context of Psalms 31:6
4You are the place where I can hide, so keep me safe. Do not let my enemies' traps catch me. 5I put my life into your hands. I know that you will save me, Lord, because you are a God that I can trust. I hate people who worship useless idols. As for me, I trust in the Lord. 7I am very happy because of your faithful love. You see when I suffer. You know when I am very upset. 8You have not put me under the power of my enemies. You have led me into an open place, where I can be safe.

Commentaries on Psalms 31:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6I have hated them - That is, I have abominated their ways. Idolaters are the persons of whom David speaks. I trust in the Lord - While they trust in vanities vain things; (for an idol is nothing in the worid); and in lying vanities; (for much is promised and nothing given); I trust in Jehovah, who is God all-sufficient, and is my Shepherd, and therefore I shall lack no good thing.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6I have hated them that regard lying vanities - This is evidently stated as a reason for the prayer offered in the previous verses. It is a reference by the psalmist to his own past life; to his general aim and conduct. The meaning is, that he had been a friend of God; that he had separated himself from wicked men; and he now prays in return for His protection and interposition. The sentiment is similar to that which occurs in Psalm 26:3-5. See the notes…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-65-6. commit my spirit--my life, or myself. Our Saviour used the words on the Cross [Lu 23:46], not as prophetical, but, as many pious men have done, as expressive of His unshaken confidence in God. The Psalmist rests on God's faithfulness to His promises to His people, and hence avows himself one of them, detesting all who revere objects of idolatry (compare De 32:21; 1Co 8:4).Read the comment
